One of mine and Matthew's favourite places to visit is the Canary Islands. We've been going to the island of Gran Canaria for years now and always have a splendid time. As much as we enjoy visiting new and exciting places, there is something so nice about a sunny visit to a place we know well. We always go to the same place on the island, a little town called Puerto de Mogan, and it's just the nicest spot for sun, sea, and chilling out.
We've been to Mogan three times before (the last being in 2013, when we got engaged), so when we were looking for a late November break in the sun, it was an instant front runner. I've never taken a holiday at this time of year before (thirty years of being in/working in education will do that), so I was excited to see what a November break would be like.
The answer?
Lovely.
To go from London's pre-Christmas hustle and bustle and dark, rainy days to bright blue skies and sunny walks around the town and harbour was at once glorious....and a tad bizarre.
I always love the flowers and greenery in the little town.
We whiled away many hours drinking wine and eating yummy food - this bruschetta was delicious as a lunchtime snack.
The pace of life was chilled.
Loved seeing the Christmas decorations going up! Palm trees and fairy lights, what a winning combo.
Again, I was stuck at how similar the Canaries and Hawaii are - both volcanic islands, lovely climates, friendly folk.
Mid afternoon ice cream = winning.
We love to wander around the harbour and look at the boats, which come from as far away as Norway, South Africa, and Greece.
We did loads of walking in and around the town - the sunshine and lovely mild weather were perfect for doing so.
Amazing mojitos at Cuba Libre.
One of my favourite parts of the holiday was when we went to Zona Verde for a proper Canarian feast - we shared a gorgeous, wood grilled Chateaubriand with the traditional accompaniments of mojo potatoes, salad, chickpeas and tzatziki. Some of the best steak I've had in a while!
Isn't it just such a pretty town?
Tapas for lunch is always a good idea.
It was such fun to have a little time together to relax and unwind, away from the busy-ness of London. Now we are back I'm so glad we made time for a little break to regroup and chill. Can't wait for our next holiday!
