#TravelLinkUp: Travel Fears and Scares

I came late to the travel party. Growing up we rarely had the opportunity to take family holidays, and a few nights under canvas, a daytrip here or there, or a good day on the hill, was the most we could muster.  One driving holiday up from Germany to Denmark, and a couple of school music trips, were the only true 'travel' I'd done until I reached university age. I was lucky enough to live in another country for several years though, so my wandering heart did some cracking exploring while there.

While studying money was short and I worked through my holidays, so while I travelled more (jaunts to the west coast of Scotland, trips to see friends studying elsewhere), I didn't travel very far.

Once I was teaching, however, I caught the travel bug, hard. I still remember the first time I bought a cheap and cheerful Easyjet flight over to Europe. Or the first time I went to the US. Or the first time I stayed in a proper hotel (at the grand old age of 21. I was far too excited by plush beds, tiny toiletries, and the sheer idea of room service!). Since then I've seen so many amazing things, been to some amazing places, and experienced some true wonders. And I'm so grateful, you guys.

I love travelling so much now that I rarely think about the downsides, the worries and the fears, but that's exactly what this month's travel link up is asking us to write about. And when I sat down and thought about it, I was able to come up with a few 'fears' that I have when I'm travelling.

Weather. Specifically, warm weather!

I am a heat and humidity wuss. I get stressed. I can't sleep. I get sunstroke and heatstroke at the drop of a hat (even if I am, in fact, wearing a hat). I am so prone to feeling poorly in the heat that Matthew  actually had to postpone his proposal by 24 hours when too much time in the sun rendered me headachey, dehydrated and confined to bed.

Generally I'm now a master of selecting destinations where I know I can handle the climate, but it means some places I may well never see, and that sometimes my enjoying a destination fully can be a bit of a gamble! Cold or moderate climates I can boss though, and aircon, shade and swimming pools help a lot in warmer places.

Clumsiness. I fall over/bump myself a lot.

Gravity and I work well together for the most part, but sometimes we fall out and I trip / slip / fall / get an attack of the Bambi legs. I'm always worried that I'll come a cropper on holiday and be hobbling around for days (we love to walk a lot on breaks) .

Being late, or being disorganised.

I am, by nature, a worrier. I doublecheck things, set several alarms, live by my Google Calendar. Every night I have a long and well-honed routine of checks and doublechecks before I go to bed, and that's just in my own environment. When travelling these anxieties can really rise to the surface, and I've lost count of the restless nights of sleep I've had prior to heading off on a holiday! There's also a lot of checking of bags, money, passport too, and lists, lists everywhere.

When it comes to getting to the airport or train station, I am perpetually early. Luckily Matthew, my main partner in travelling crime, is an early bird too so we have our routine down pat. However, when travelling with others it can be high-stress - I remember pelting through an airport in Spain after a girls' trip as my three work friends tried to continue shopping while they were 'last call'ing our flight. Made my blood pressure go sky high!

So those were the only fears I could muster, which in the ocean of goodness that is travel equals about a teacup, right? Travel brings such joy, a few worries and wobbles are definitely worth it. I've only been back from holidays for a week and I'm already looking at flights longingly (even if my credit card isn't, ha!).

Looking forward to reading the other posts on this theme! Linking up with the lovely #TravelLinkUp gang :)

Off, off and away!

The bags are packed.

The plans are made.

The housemate has a number for the vets and a chicken budget for spoiling the fur-children (yes, I know they aren't real children. But man, I love 'em). I've double checked everything is switched off and safe in our rooms.

The out of office is on the email and the car will be here in a couple of hours.

I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

Excited to visit New York for the very first time - a place I've seen and heard so much about. I've listened to songs about it, seen it in movies and TV shows, read about it in dozens of books. I can't wait to be a proper tourist and check so many things off the list - the Empire State building, the High Line, Central Park, pizza by the slice....

I can't wait to explore Boston and Cambridge in our super quick two days there. Such an amazing place, I'm glad we managed to wedge in a quick visit amongst the other excitements!

Toronto is such a favourite and I cannot wait to return! I'm looking forward to quality time with my girl Christy, catching up with our friends Szymon and Caroline, and exploring bits of the city I haven't seen before.

And then? Vegas. Cocktails and blackjack and shopping and spa times, oh my!

I'm taking my laptop and may well do a quick hello blog while I'm there, but the big posts will come afterwards - I have two new memory cards and I am not afraid to use them! I'll also be sharing lots of fun on my Instagram over at @cmclaire as well as plenty of silliness over on Snapchat, where I'm @cmclaire12.

Have a great couple of weeks - it's time to holiday here!

Setting Sail With Royal Caribbean...

...well, not exactly.

I should explain.

One of the funnest things about being a blogger is the sheer range of events and trips I get to attend. Whether it's a trip away, a day at the races, a restaurant review or a press day, I get to enjoy some really unique and interesting things. I'm also lucky enough to be able to do a lot of these in the company of friends I've made through  blogging. How lucky is that?

A few weeks ago the lovely folk at Royal Caribbean asked me if I'd like to head down to Southampton to spend a day aboard one of their ships, the Navigator of the Seas. We'd be able to tour the ship, try out the facilities, look around the rooms and enjoy a spot of lunch on board before the ship headed off on a cruise. So we'd get to go on the ship, just not depart with it!

Being both a nut for the sea and naturally nosey, and when I heard the divine Charlie, Katy and Charley were signed up too, I was both on board, and reading to get on board. I was also excited because I've never been on a cruise but a couple of my friends love it and are always telling me how great cruises are - this daytrip would give me the ideal chance to have a look around before choosing whether or not the cruise life was for me!

Which is how I found myself at Waterloo at 7.20am on a Sunday, awaiting the lovely Katy for our journey south! Unfortunately Charley couldn't attend as she was poorly, but we sent her plenty of messages on Whats App so she could still join in. With Katy for company the journey flew by and we were soon at the port ready to meet up with Charlie, check in, and board the ship!

Thanks!

Being bloggers, we naturally had to take a shoe pic (or seven). This is in one of the many lifts which transport you around the ship - it is BIG. We were all rather taken with the days of the week signs in each lift!

Going up, looking down.

The central atrium was so pretty and glam - many of the shared spaces reminded me of Las Vegas. After glimpsing the centre of the ship we wanted to go out on deck - the day had dawned grey, misty and rainy, but by the time we boarded the skies were blue and the sun was beaming down.

We then spent a good few hours clocking up a bazillion steps (my fitbit was oh-so-happy) touring the many facilities on board. I swear, you could spend a month on board and not get bored or be wanting new options! Utterly spoiled for choice.

From an arcade filled with machines and activities...

....to a serene, quiet library.

A game of roulette in the casino...

...to enacting movie moments with your silly friends.

Going for a trip up the climbing wall...

...to working off some of the cocktails and treats with a workout class.

Working out where next your route might take you...

...to feeling the burn in the top-of-the-range gym.

Having a little fun on the on board ice-rink...

...or perusing the many and varied pieces of art and memorablia on board.

Trying your luck on the skeeball...

...or the slot machines in the casino.

Watching a performance in the enormous theatre...

....or enjoying the many pools up on deck.

Braving the choppy waters and learning to surf on Flowrider...

...or enjoying bubbling waters of another kind entirely at the spa (I almost stayed here when we happened upon it - gorgeous facilities).

I don't think you could get bored while at sea! Thank heavens there's a timetable to keep everything (*pun klaxon*) shipshape.

After all that (and some mini-golf too, which I was clearly enjoying far too much as I took very few photos of it!) we went off to tour the rooms. We saw suites, interior cabins, familt rooms, exterior cabins, and really got a feel for the different accommodations. Everything was finished nicely and there were lots of little extras you could opt for to choose the room you'd most enjoy. One suite even had a grand piano, which I was just tickled by. That's living, baby!

As we toured the ship so many rooms were set up for anniversaries, birthdays, and honeymoons - super cute.

Some of the suites had lovely dining areas where you could dine á deux or with a smaller party if you wanted too. I am a sucker for a suite and love having the chance to have a little privacy away from crowds (ever the ambivert!) so this really appealed, and I loved the finish & styling of these rooms.

The interior cabins were smaller but quite ingenious in their design - every nook and cranny had been utilised to ensure you had lots of space for storage and getting ready. With the room above you even get two and a half Charlies!

Full shot of an interior room.

This king bed was in one of the family rooms. These rooms were fabulous, with a room for parents, a twin room for kids, and a couchbed in the living space too, as well as two bathrooms and a huge balcony with loungers and sitting space. It was like a little flat - on a ship!

I liked how many of the rooms and suites had sitting areas - I love when rooms give you somewhere to sit other than the bed!

As you can see, we had a busy old time touring. I was simply taken aback at how much there was to do on board, and I'm sure there's plenty of other things we missed. It's worth bearing in mind that that's all before considering trips at the destinations you visit, and Royal Caribbean sail to a huge variety of places - I love the look of the Northern European ones or the Transatlantic sailings which take in the Caribbean, the Canary Islands or the east coast of the US.

We said farewell to the team and disembarked before the ship set off for its cruise - I felt rather blue getting off and did consider stowing away for a few moments! I really enjoyed the visit and it has definitely opened my eyes to cruising as a possible holiday choice - now I just have to convince Matthew, or a few girlfriends, that they want to come too!

Disclaimer, as ever: I was invited to attend a day visit onboard the Navigator of the Seas by Royal Caribbean, and was hosted by their PR team on the day. As the ship was getting ready to set sail I like to think we got a pretty fair glimpse of proceedings! Thank you very much to Royal Caribbean for having us; all opinions within this post are, as always, my own.

Life Lately

Today, we are back to life with a bump.

After the fever pitch intensity of the last fortnight of wedding planning, then the busy-ness of the big day itself, and the delicious lull of the tailend of last week, now we are back to reality!  Matthew is back to work, and all this week I'm in school prepping for back to school.  The boys return September 3rd, training commences September 1st, so this week I'm in for two full days and two half-days to get my room in order.  I've been so frenetic with all the nuptual based activities and things to organise, it will be lovely in a way to return to the tried and true rhythm of September, as tiring as it always is.

Last week was charming.  After the wedding we were lucky enough to have several of the players still around, and it was great to do lunches, dinners, and drinks.  Throughout the wedding experience Matthew and I were just blown away by the phenomenal amount of support and the huge outpouring of love in our general direction.  Our friends and family are just the best!

Our little minimoon to Matlock was super too, just the ideal respite from it all.  Aunty Kaz very kindly looked after the katzen, leaving us free to enjoy the break.  Originally we had been forecast rain, rain, rain, but instead our time in Derbyshire was sunny, cool and delicious.  On Thursday we arrived and shared a 'chippy tea' (always a treat for northern types!) before conquering a few of the local hills (never trust a road called 'Steep Turnpike' - the clue is definitely in the name!) then finding a cute local pub with a good range of real ales.

Friday dawned clear and crisp.  The forecast was for rain, so we set off straight after a yummy breakfast for a walk.  We walked a few miles in a loop to the nearby beauty spot of Matlock Bar and had a great time snooping and playing on the 2p machines.  Then we stretched our legs some more and had some delicious tea and scones by the Riverside.  The rest of the afternoon was filled with strolling and reading.  We then found a cute little cocktail bar and a super Italian restaurant before retiring early.  Fresh air makes me sleepy!

Saturday we found ourselves stuck with our bags as our B&B had no storage.  Matthew's team, Blyth Spartans, were down to play a match against Matlock FC (our minimoon location being no accident.  Check out my wife-points!), so he met up with the boys and I curled up and enjoyed copious cups of tea!  I would have loved to attend the match but the suitcase was an encumbrance.  An afternoon of reading and writing was a very pleasant way to spend some time instead!

On Sunday we enjoyed the first of what I hope are many 'Super Secret Sundays'.  More on that in the next post!

Then yesterday was a day of cleaning, tidying, writing notes and ironing.

Because today, life gets real!

100 Happy Days: 61 - 65

When we returned from Cheltenham we headed for Sunday lunch at a friends' pub (Aldo & Jo) with two university friends of mine, Tim & Alasdair.  Delicious lunch, good chat, and a fuss with Mr Darcy, Jo's lovely doggie, into the bargain.  The sign made me giggle - Candy is Jo's name for me (she's Chips ;)).

On Day 62, the Tour de France came to our neck of the woods.  As in, our actual road.  My pictures were far too shoddy to share (those guys are fast!), but I did snap this one of a rather handsome chap!

I also went for a wee potter around B&Q, looking for new plants for the garden :)

On day 63, Fry was fascinated by wrapping ribbons.

Whereas I was smiling once more at my name-to-be.

The last day of school brought tears and smiles and flowers....

...and Poppet claiming another box as her own.

Day 65 was the first day of the summer holidays.

Look at that rain!

Homebody

This break from work has been so chilled.  It's been a real treat to have time to spend at home, with Matthew, with friends, with the cats, just regrouping.  I have a tendency to work at little too much during termtime (I'm sure many bosses would argue that there's no such thing!), clocking in at 60 hours plus, so not doing a tonne over this holiday has been soul satisfying!  I'll be doing some new term prep Wednesday, Thursday and Monday, but mainly I feel rested and quite jolly.  Herewith some pictures from a break well spent.

This little one has thrived having so much attention.  Such a blessing.

Simple things - flowers, candles, washing on the line - bring such joy.

Time to bake and experiment with new recipes :)  Here are fudge cupcakes with caramel buttercream frosting.  Yum!

Roasted veggies with honey & chilli.  A firm family favourite!

Chance to attack the giant pile of magazines and books that have gathered by my bed.

Long lunches.

Lots of chats over cups of tea with my love.

Learning to siesta with the katzen.

Inventing new recipes.  Wholemeal pita + redcurrant jelly + rocket + brie = GOOD.
