Cornwall, part 3

A last batch of photos from our adventures out west with the family.  I can't wait until the clan gets back together again!

Daniels and Suthers (my sister's dogs) enjoying some playing outside!

Daniels decided to give me a "kiss".  Ewwwwwww!

She then composed herself for a proper snap.  Such a quirky little dog!

My sister's view - a little different to mind her in East London!

As we hadn't been north for Christmas, Peter had brought my birthday and Matthew and my Christmas presents with him.  He knows how much I loathe the whole '50 shades...' phenom, so this gift made me laugh and laugh!  Good shout, bro.

What a view!  Our chalet was so nice - plenty of space, light and comfy.  The perfect base for a family holiday!

Cornwall, part 2

A few more pictures from a lovely long weekend away.

Matthew and I set off for a couple of hours on our own, and decided to visit Port Isaac.  The route there was crazy, involving lots of winding roads, an unexpected ford and more than one pheasant attempting to 'make friends' with our rental car!

Big hand or teeny tiny pint?

While we wandered around Wadebridge we saw all kinds of cute and quirky little shops...and this utterly bizarre shop window.  Matthew spotted the parachuting baby first!

Those views....

Sian's dog Sutherland was very pleased to have some extra visitors to play with!

By our chalet there was a small pond with five funny little ducks.  Here they are, captured mid-conversation!

Cornwall, part 1

After the rush of term and the loveliness of a weekend in Cornwall, now the very chilled part of the holiday has begun.  Today has been almost stationary - reading, writing, cleaning, ironing and playing with cats.  Just what the doctor ordered.  And giving me plenty of time to recap our adventures in Cornwall.

It was so nice to spend time with the family!  It had been years since all of us were together in the same space and place, and the chance to spend time together reconnecting was wonderful.  We played Uno, went for walks, gossiped, cooked together, and generally logged some high quality family time.  Despite the cold weather and the chilly winds, it was a heartwarming long weekend!

Mummy and Daddy (I disturbed his ironing to snap this, ha!).

My sweet mummy and I - it was so lovely to have so many chats over cups of tea with her!

Sian and I.  She and Chris (her fiancé) are getting on so well in Cornwall and it was lovely to have a good old big sister nose around her new environs!

With my hilarious little brother.  Peter and I have just the same ridiculous sense of humour and he even consented to play Monopoly with me (I adore Monopoly far too much!).  He won the Game of Ones!

Matthew off adventuring!

And some sea based glee from me :)

And breathe.....

Happy long weekend, you beautiful people.  And to my Christian brethren, may the glory of Good Friday and the wonder of Easter be alive in your hearts today and always.

Here, I am decompressing as the moments go by.  The past few months for both Matthew and I have been a bit of a rollercoaster (not within our cosy little duo, but without), but today, as the sun shines through the lounge window here at Gatwick, I feel like spring is finally here - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Why are we in Gatwick?  Because we're flying down to Cornwall to share the long weekend with my side of the family.  Mum, Dad, Sian, Peter, Chris, Matthew, me....all in the same space, together.  It's been too long.

After this break the Easter vacation stretches out for days and days and days.  And there's so much fun planned - brunches and reading and visits and holiday, cats and gardening and dinners and adventures.  Just what the doctor ordered.  And plenty of time for blogging too!

But now it's time to finish this cup of tea, log off the laptop, and head west for a weekend of walking, wine, family and board games.

Happy Easter, lovelies.

Five Minute Friday: What Mama Did

Five Minute Friday

Linking up with the delicious Lisa-Jo, writing about someone very dear to my heart, my mummy.  I love her to pieces, so the chance to sit down and write about her is a real treat.  I'm afraid I don't have any pictures that really do her justice - like Matthew, she doesn't like pictures to begin with, so the choices are slim at best, and I don't have any on this new computer.

Yet.

Watch out, mother :).

GO.

When I think of my mum, many scenes play out.  Family dinners; gallons of tea shared; books passed between us like illicit substances (ah, the Thornley-woman addiction to words!  She, Sian and I all share this compulsion to dive into the black and white lines of joy, sorrow, horror, adventure); the friendly call of "jammies, please," after a long day at work; the big squeezy hugs as I headed back to school; the fail-safe cupcake recipe which gains more fans every year.  She's quite the woman, and if I grow up to be half as cool as her, or half as cool as Matthew's mother Barbara for that matter, I will be high-fiving myself all the live long day.  Both families thrive and thrill to strong, impressive, kind women.

When I think of my mum, and what she did, and what she does, one quality really shines out.  I'm spoilt for choice really - she's wicked clever, funny, understanding, verbose, kind - but the one quality I most admire in her, the one I covet the most for myself, the one I'll no doubt tell my children all about is her incredible penchant for hard work.

My mother is a grafter.

Never content to sit back and do the minimum, she gives 100% to all that she does.  She's had great success in so many areas, and I'm so proud of her for that, but even prouder of the bucket loads of work she's put into it.  She left school young, worked hard, raised three kids, then started studying up a storm.  She earned her degree and postgrad at the same time as me - commuting down to Aberdeen on the early, early train, then back each evening (that's four to five hours of commuting a day!).  I pipped her (barely) to be first in the family to graduate university, she was mere days behind.

Now she works long hours helping children and families and I am constantly amazed by all she achieves and how much time and hard work she puts into things.  Whenever I'm tempted to take my foot off the gas, I think of her and getting back into the game happens swiftly.

My awesome, talented, hard-working mum.  I'm so proud of her!

STOP.

Happy Mother's Day...

...to my beautiful, talented and funny mummy!

Thank you for all your love and support and for always believing in me, for giving me a special home and a wonderful (and undeniably quirky and eccentric!) family. I am so proud to call you mum and love the brilliance you bring to the world through your hard work, dedication and all round loveliness. Thank you for being such a wonderful mum!

Thank you for always impressing upon me the importance of education, of independence, and of giving back. Thank you for giving me the 'mad hair' gene and a love for reading, a decent debate, and a proper cup of tea. Thank you for long silly phone calls where we put the world to rights and suitable levels of excitement for new Boden dresses.

We love you loads, mum!
