Please Mr Postman.....

Linky

Ever since I can remember, I have loved sending things in the mail.

Cards.

Letters.

Gifts.

Pictures.

Recipes.

That silly little thing you find in a kooky little store and just know your friend will enjoy.

The book you finish and mail to a fellow bookworm with just a post it on it, reading: "Read soon.  Please.  I have to chat about this with you!"

Mixtapes and mix CDs, back in the day.

Postcards.

Thank you notes.

There's something so lovely about something arriving.  Sometimes it's fairly expected - cards on your birthday, at Christmas.  Sometimes it comes completely out of the blue.

It's always a joy.

Perhaps it stems from my days at boarding school, rushing back at breaktime to the manor house, peeking through the letter box, trying to catch a glimpse of a parcel or a letter with your name on.  Then coming back at lunchtime when the house staff would hand out the letters and bundles.  You always hoped it wouldn't be Miss Q or Miss S - they liked to hide post, or to 'confiscate' it for a few days for some invented misdemeanour.  Angry, harsh women, both of them.  But Miss T or Mrs B would smile and pass the things right to you, or would commiserate with you on the days where nothing arrived.  With family so far away, teenage me loved those letters, the flavour of home.

Now, in a world where so many things are becoming easy and instant, it's lovely to have a medium that requires effort (the choosing of paper or card, the finding of the stamps, the trip to the postbox or the post office).

It's also grand to feel part of a grand tradition of letter writers; Austen, Lee, Mitford, Dickens.  Centuries and decades and years of pens on paper, salutations and sign offs.  What a treat post is!

Show Us Your Life: Christmas Cards

This week Kelly's link up is all about Christmas Cards!  Christmas cards really are one of my favourite parts of the festive season.  I love hearing the letterbox and rushing down to see what goodies have arrived.  As someone who loves post anyway, it's a delight to get so many jolly letters and cards arriving all at once!

We display almost all of ours in our sitting room, either tacked up on the door or on the shelves.

Below is our Christmas card for this year.  I decided to change it up a little and go for a Christmas postcard rather than a card and I was so pleased with the final result.  I used Erin Condren (such a fan of their designs), and the service was top notch ~ quick, friendly, thorough and beautiful!

Merry Christmas, all!

Fall Swap link up!

A few weeks back I signed up for a fall blog swap on my friend Tracy's blog, and yesterday my super fun package arrived! I was linked up with Katie, who is just as sweet as her blog suggests :)

She sent me all these goodies:
Pie cutters in beautiful leaf shapes (Matthew will be very happy, he loves a good pie and mash meal!), a lovely fall candle (which my entire class took turns to smell!), a gorgeous autumnal nail varnish (I feel a mani-pedi coming on at the weekend) and a Starbucks card too.  Such a lovely treat to receive!  Thank you Katie, and thank you to all who co-ordinated the swap - I can't wait for the next one!

A Fun Giveaway!

As I mentioned in yesterday's, I'm doing a fall blog swap with a lovely blogger called Katie from California.  I hope her package is there or nearly there by now and that she loves her gifties.  While I was putting together her package (which I loved doing - making up 'Claire packages' is one of my main thrills in life!), I thought it would be nice to do another giveaway!

Earlier this year I selected a bunch of my favourite things, and had people enter a giveaway to have the items mailed to them in a package filled with joy!  The lovely Samantha won that giveaway, and I adored shopping for treats and little happies and books and things to share with her.  So I'm going to do the same now, but make it a bunch of my favourite 'autumn' things - the season of cold nights, Hallowe'en, bonfire night, back to school and the start of the holiday season.  I can't wait to put together a package for the winner!

To secure an entry in this giveaway you can:

1. Leave a comment on this post (please and thank you!)
2. Become a follower of this blog (or let me know in the comments if you already are!)
3. Blog about this giveaway, or link to this giveaway in a post on something else (let me know in the comments if you do so).
4. Tweet about this giveaway (let me know in the comments if you do so).
5. Become a fan of 'Country Mouse Claire' on facebook (button is on top left of the blog, let me know in the comments if you do so).
6. Sign up  to follow me on instagram, twitter, and/or pinterest (buttons above too, please let me know in the comments if you do so).

(One entry per item, maximum of eight entries per person)

I am so excited to hit John Lewis, Paperchase, Lakeland and Amazon to create a custom-made parcel for one of my lovely readers!  I won't make it until we have the winner, as I love to add a personal touch!

Good luck!

Some of Sam's winnings - sweets and DVDs and books and stationery and yarn, oh mys!

This giveaway will run until 11 pm GMT on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012.

Mix of the Month

Hello!

Over the summer I've done lots of reminiscing, lots of thinking, and LOTS of listening to music. And listening to all those old mix CDs filled me with nostalgia, for that moment when a mix would arrive from a friend, full of new tunes, old favourites, and always always always at least one tune you were bound to hate.

So, each month of this academic year I am going to make a mix (on a theme)....and if you would like a copy, please just leave me a comment or drop me an email. Let's get the music flowing.

This month's theme is 'Back To School' and it's a double CD. I'm not going to spoiler here and write out the whole list of tracks, but it contains some gems like the songs below. Let me know if you'd like a mix in the mail!

Girls And Boys - Blur

Behave - Charlotte Hatherley

1234 - Feist

Beat Control - Tilly and the Wall

Make Your Own Kind of Music - The Mamas and the Papas

1919 - 383s

Ooooh, no video, mysterious...

Show Us Your Life: How Do You Stay Organised

It's Show Us Your Life time again, and as ever I am linking up with Kelly over at Kelly's Korner.

And this week we are looking at how you keep your life organised. And believe me, I need all the help I can get. I find that I swing from being hyper-organised to being pretty disorganised, but my many adventures in this arena have helped me to pick up a few tricks and tips en route....

1. My first tip would be....don't try to be *too* (fixed now!) organised. As a teacher I can revel in timetables, schedules and to-do lists a little too much, and all too often I get so caught up in the preparation and planning of things that midway through the actual tasks I am exhausted and run out of steam. That being said, there are a few tools I use which I find really helpful.

2. Centralise your calendar / diary. At one point last term I had up to five calendars on the go (home paper diary, school planner, Outlook at school, Outlook at home, iPhone calendar). Utter disaster. Now I have google calendar set up, because then I can access this from anywhere with a few clicks and instantly say yes or no to that meeting, lunch or party.

3. Take an afternoon or evening and add all of your important birthdays and anniversaries onto an online reminders service. I use birthday-reminders.com, which is free and useful. I get reminders two weeks and one week before important events and this helps me to be better prepared for birthdays and special days (most of the time!).

4. Throw things away. I almost put that in all caps. The more I live in this flat, the more I realise I have way too much stuff. So far this year I have donated / recycled / tossed out several bin liners full of stuff and the flat looks tidier, things are easier to find, and I feel all kinds of virtuous too!

5. Learn to say 'no' (politely). Growing up I was the crown princess of taking far too much on, with the net result that I was often exhausted and frequently botched things / rushed things / wore myself down / let other parts of my life suffer in an effort to be as perfect as possible. Now when I am asked to do something I feel able to say 'no' (albeit with a few pangs of guilt!) when it will be an overstretch, or at the very least can ask for a moment to check whether I can actually do the additional task well.

6. Keep a stash of pretty cards, cards for special occasions, little hostess gifts, stamps and ingredients for a cake in supply around the house. They will prove to be lifesavers!

I'm really looking forward to reading around this blog tour - tips are always good!
